Venus Remedies ties up with IMTECH and Panjab University to develop Typhoid detection kits

Revolutionary Kit to bring down typhoid detection time from the conventional 48 hours to few minutes

Venus Remedies, a leading R&D-oriented pharma company in the country, has tied-up with IMTECH a renowned Research Center of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Department of Microbiology Panjab University to jointly develop a diagnostic kit for typhoid. The kit is expected to bring down the detection time of the disease from 48 hours (from conventional Vidal test) to just few minutes.

"The kit is expected to be out in the market by 2013. The project has got a lot of social importance attached to it as world over typhoid affects roughly 17 million people annually, causing nearly 600,000 deaths. Most of the deaths are caused due to a lack of early detection of the disease. Venus has the mandate to market this kit world over after conducting necessary trials," said Dr. Manu Chaudhary, director-research at Venus Remedies Ltd.

For the project, Venus Medicine Research Center (VMRC), the research arm of Venus Remedies, has signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) a laboratory of CSIR and Panjab University.

The research project entitled "Surface components as specific markers for the development of immunosensor kit for detection of Salmonella typhii," is being developed under the financial assistance from the Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology. Salmonella typhii is the causative agent of typhoid.

Dr. Parveen Rishi from Department of Microbiology, Dr C Raman Suri from IMTECH and a team of scientists from VMRC under guidance of Dr. Manu Chaudhary will work collaboratively for success of this project.

This agreement will open doors for more industry academy partnerships for us in future. "Venus Remedies is open to research related discussion with the academia and research institutes having promising products, both domestically and abroad. The success of West in R&D could be highly attributed to strong association of the industry and academia. Indian companies should look for similar tie-ups," said Dr. Manu Chaudhary.
