  • APP Pharma join hands to sell generic breast cancer drug

    APP Pharmaceuticals Inc. will join Mylan Inc. and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. in marketing generic versions of AstraZeneca PLC's breast cancer drug Arimidex. Soon APP Pharmaceuticals will start selling 1-milligram tablets of anastrozole in the United States after the Food and Drug Administration granted marketing approval to Fresenius Kabi Oncology Ltd. Both businesses are units of Germany's Fresenius Kabi Pharmaceutical Holding Inc.

    The drug is used to treat some forms of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. In 2009 U.S. sales of Arimidex totaled about $917 million. Mylan also has received regulatory approval to sell a generic version of Arimidex. Teva has recently received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for this product.
  • India, Denmark to start biotechnology research project in collaboration

    India and Denmark will soon begin strategic research collaboration in biotechnology. For both of the countries it is of major importance to provide solutions by means of biotechnology in order to accommodate challenges related to health, food and bioressources in a sustainable way. The main objective of the collaborating is to strengthen and intensify the research effort within these areas and to integrate the specific competencies of the Indo-Danish research groups involved.

    Under the project, the researchers will cover areas of biotechnology aspects of nanoscience, nanotechnology, bioengineering and bioinformatics in bioresources, biological manufacturing and biological products. The DBT and the Programme Commission on Health, Food and Welfare under the Danish Council will manage the collaborative projects jointly for Strategic Research.

    The aim of this proposal is for the funded project to be able to deliver considerable and tangible results at the end of the project period. Hence, the joint proposals must be based on existing collaborations in the form co-publication, PhD exchange, project collaboration or other relevant research related activities in order to be of significant strength and importance within the field of biotechnology.
